In the remote area of Mamli Sharqi near Afrin, Syria, lives Maryam al-Arsan, a 75-year-old grandmother who has faced unimaginable hardships. Despite the adversities, she remains resilient, caring for her blind husband and two grandchildren. Their story is a testament to the transformative power of humanitarian aid, particularly through the Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) program.
Maryam and her family have endured the turmoil of displacement multiple times, fleeing from one place to another during the years of war. "We got tired of moving," she recalls, her voice heavy with emotion. Her husband, once a proud homeowner in Jazraya, now leans on a worn cushion, lamenting the loss of their home and the life they once knew. "We are doomed to misery and relocation," Maryam sighs, reflecting on the cruel twists of fate that have left her unable to provide even basic comforts for her family.
Her struggles intensified five years ago when her husband suffered a stroke, leading to a journey to Turkey for treatment. He returned blind, and Maryam took on the role of his guide, becoming his eyes in their challenging world. With one son emigrated to Lebanon and another nearby but jobless, Maryam bears the responsibility of caring for her grandchildren alone.

The turning point in their lives came when Welthungerhilfe (WHH) staff reached out to Maryam’s family. They were accepted into the MPCA project funded by the Aid Fund for Northern Syria (AFNS). This initiative provides the most vulnerable families with a monthly amount of $100 over eight rounds, significantly impacting their lives.
As soon as Maryam receives the money, she pays off her debts to local shops, buys basic foods, and occasionally purchases fruits, meat, and chicken to nourish her family. "The assistance from WHH has been a lifeline," Maryam says, her eyes a mixture of relief and lingering worry. This financial support has enabled her to manage her household expenses carefully, restoring a semblance of normalcy and dignity to their lives.
Maryam’s story is a poignant reminder of the enduring strength and resilience of those affected by conflict. The MPCA project has not only provided for her family’s immediate needs but also empowered her to face the future with hope. Her unwavering spirit and determination to overcome adversity highlight the critical role of humanitarian aid in transforming lives.
Maryam's journey, filled with challenges and perseverance, underscores the profound impact of the MPCA program. With the support of WHH and AFNS, she has been able to provide for her family and maintain their dignity amidst the hardships. "My dreams are summarized in two words: I want to live the rest of my life with my children in a decent life like any other family," Maryam shares. Her husband's wistful wish echoes this sentiment: "Returning home and not repeating the displacement experience is all I dream of after all these hardships."
